The Lake Geneva Symphony Orchestra is a volunteer ensemble comprised of musicians from throughout southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois. In the LGSO, professional musicians, music teachers, adult beginners, high school students, and everybody in between come together to perform the world's greatest music in an atmosphere focused on high performance standards, growing, and learning.
An orchestra has existed in the Lake Geneva area since the early 1970's when an area businessman and string teacher formed the Geneva Lake Civic Symphony. In 2001, the group had shrunk to only nine musicians. A new chapter in the Orchestra's history began in March of 2001 with the appointment of Andrew Dogan as Music Director and Conductor and organized under the name Lake Geneva Community Orchestra. Thanks to the efforts of the orchestra's musicians, Board of Directors, and Music Director Andrew Dogan, the Lake Geneva Symphony Orchestra grew to over fifty members, with 501 (c) (3) tax-exempt status. Mr. Dogan retired from his position as Music Director in August, 2009 but continues to work with the Orchestra as Guest Conductor and spiritual support.
In May, 2009, the organization changed its name to Lake Geneva Symphony Orchestra, reflecting the Orchestra's size, breadth and capabilities. In February, 2010, the orchestra named David Anderson as it's next music director. David conducted the May concert and begins his first full season in September, 2010.
The Orchestra performs three 'classical' performances each year in November, March, and May, in addition to summer 'Pops' concerts throughout the area, and has collaborated in performances with several soloists of regional and national prominence. The Orchestra is regularly featured in the Geneva Lake Chamber of Commerce Music In The Park concert series and performs annually as part of the Geneva Lake Art Association's Art In The Park Festival.
An important mission of the Lake Geneva Symphony Orchestra is education. In addition to being an outlet for area musicians to continue performing and a source of entertainment and culture for area residents, the Orchestra is strongly committed to educational outreach. The Orchestra regularly presents a series of "Schoolday" concerts, traveling to local elementary schools to present educational performances introducing schoolchildren to the sounds and instruments of the symphony orchestra.
The Lake Geneva Symphony Orchestra recently was given an award by the Walworth County Arts Council in recognition of its efforts in furthering the arts in Walworth County and beyond. The Orchestra continually seeks to improve and develop the quality of its performances and continually seeks partnerships with area schools, universities, and arts organizations to further its mission in the community.
